About Us

STEM for the Streets is a student-led non-profit organization aimed at exposing historically disenfranchised and under-served children to STEM through hands-on science experiments and engaging lesson plans accompanied by scientists, doctors, and engineers.

Our Story Cogs in the Machine

Growing up in SE Washington, D.C., Kevin Akers witnessed how one’s environment could cause them to take the wrong path when his best friend from childhood began to be involved in gang activity.
Being Hispanic in upper-level math and science courses meant that, for Victor Del Carpio, he was the token minority in the room, which alienated him throughout the course of his school years.
Experiencing this racial opportunity gap firsthand, albeit in different ways, Kevin and Victor decided to take matters into their own hands. With the extraordinary help of LearnServe International, they were able to research, plan, and execute their vision for bridging the gap – the disparity of race within the STEM fields – while at the same time tackling more granular issues that cause such gap.
